Aviator sunglasses are the pilots choice of eyewear. Why?
Their teardrop shape mean their wide field of view are perfect for flying. They are also the truckers choice of eyewear for driving.
The term "aviator", as opposed to "pilot" or other terms, was used more in
the early days of aviation, before anyone had ever seen an airplane fly, and it
was used to show connotations of bravery and adventure. For example, the editors
at the Dayton Herald, (in an article of December 18, 1903) described the Wright
brothers' first airplane as thus: "The weight, including the body of the
aviator, is slightly over 700 pounds".

Aviator sunglasses are a style of sunglasses that were developed by Bausch
& Lomb and branded as Ray-Ban. They are characterised by dark, often reflective
lenses having an area two or three times the area of the eyeball, and metal
frames with bayonet earpieces or flexible cable temples that hook behind the
ears. The original design featured G-15 tempered glass lenses, i.e., neutral
gray, transmitting 20% of incoming light.

The classic Ray-Ban aviator is in their legends collection for obvious reasons!
Legends are made over time, through consistency, courage and character.
The same can be said for the new Ray-Ban Legends collection. Four iconic glasses
from the classic Ray-Ban collection, all re-invented in premium materials and in
three vintage lens colours, guaranteeing your look’s as original as the frames
themselves.

Aviator Sunglasses with their partner the classic Wayfarer are without a doubt one of the most iconic frame shapes. Simple design and the perfect field of view mean they have joined every designer collection in one shape or form.
Key features include their double bridge.
Look out for the teardrop shape - although modern designers will sometimes use a more square shape.
Flat frame design - modern twists may have more of a curved lens. When aviator sunglasses first came on the market lens makers did not have the technology to curve the lenses like today's lens makers.
